Where Americans invented rock & roll, and the Brits made it better, the Americans have taken it back and in the spirit of modern times- cloned it and mass produced it. As a result it's suffering all of the fatal problems of perpetual replication. Each new record seems to be just a little worse than the one before it and each new act forces us to try and distinguish it somehow from all of the others. We probably have more names to classify shitty music than the Inuit do for snow. On the Police "...I really want to like them but the first couple of records sound sonically really bad, and I just can’t get over that." This is why we have "Best Of" albums. ;) You forget that life is a circle.
